After placing second in Pool B, the Springboks advanced to the final by defeating hosts France 29-28 in the quarterfinals and England 16-15 in the semi-finals.

The two teams have previously faced each other five times in the World Cup: in the pool stage (2019), quarterfinal (2003, 2015), semifinal (2019), third-place play-off (1999), and final (1995).

Since their first meeting in 1921, New Zealand and South Africa have played 105 times overall. The Springboks have won 39 games, compared to the 62 victories by the All Blacks. Four of the games between the two teams have also ended in draws.
